What to Wear to Scarlet Night (and What Actually Happens)

ยท4 min read

Let me paint you a picture. It's your second or third night on the ship. You've been getting comfortable, figuring out the restaurants, maybe nursing a slight sunburn. Then the whole vibe shifts. Everyone on the ship is dressed in red. The pool deck transforms. There's a countdown. And then the reveal happens.

That's Scarlet Night. And it's the single best night on any Virgin Voyages sailing.

So What Actually Is Scarlet Night?

Scarlet Night is VV's signature themed party. Every sailing has one. The concept is simple: the entire ship dresses in red and throws what is, honestly, one of the best parties I've ever been to. On land or sea.

The evening starts building around sunset. You'll notice people at dinner in their scarlet outfits, the energy a little more charged than usual. After dinner, everyone gravitates toward the pool deck for the reveal. I won't spoil exactly what happens (it changes between ships and sailings), but think aerial performers, fire, music, and a genuine "holy shit" moment when the whole space transforms.

After the reveal, the party moves inside. The Manor, VV's nightclub, goes until 2 or 3am. The DJs are actually good. The dance floor is packed. And the energy is unlike anything else on the sailing.

What to Wear

Here's where people stress unnecessarily. The dress code is simple: wear red. Or scarlet. Or crimson, burgundy, maroon, cherry, ruby, wine, rose, coral. Anything in the red family counts. Beyond that, it's entirely up to you.

I've seen the full spectrum, and I mean full spectrum:

The Minimalist: Red pocket square, red tie, red lipstick, red shoes. You wore one red thing and that's enough. Totally valid.

The Casual Red: A red sundress. A red Hawaiian shirt. Red shorts and a fun top. This is probably 60% of the ship and you'll fit right in.

The Statement Maker: Full scarlet suit. Red sequin jumpsuit. A custom red outfit you've been planning since you booked. You will get compliments all night.

The Showstopper: Head-to-toe red. A cape. A red feather boa. Body glitter. Platform boots. Listen, some people treat Scarlet Night like their personal runway and honestly? They're right to.

๐Ÿงณ What to pack: Something you can dance in. (For the full packing list, check my queer traveler's packing guide.) This is not the night for anything restrictive or shoes that hurt after 20 minutes. You're going to be on your feet for hours. Comfortable and red beats elaborate and miserable every time.

For the Introverts

I know what you're thinking. "This sounds overwhelming." Fair. But here's the thing: you don't have to be in the middle of the dance floor to enjoy Scarlet Night.

The reveal on the pool deck is a spectator event. Grab a drink, find a spot with a good view, and just watch. It's genuinely impressive even if you're not a party person. Some of my favorite Scarlet Night memories are from the edges of the action, drink in hand, just taking it all in.

After the reveal, you can absolutely call it a night. Go back to your cabin, sit on the balcony with the hammock, listen to the party from a distance. No one's keeping attendance.

But if you do want to push your comfort zone a little, this is the night to do it. Something about everyone being dressed in the same color, the collective energy, the fact that half the ship is also slightly nervous. It lowers the barriers. I've met some of my favorite people on Scarlet Nights.

The Queer Energy

I need to talk about this because it's the thing that makes Scarlet Night feel different from any other cruise ship event I've experienced.

VV's baseline vibe is already inclusive. But Scarlet Night takes that and cranks it up. There's something beautifully queer about the whole thing. Everyone dressing up, expressing themselves, being a little extra. The drag performers are out. The energy is celebratory in a way that feels like Pride and a nightclub and a costume party all at once.

I've watched couples who were a little reserved during the day suddenly dancing together without a care in the world. I've seen solo travelers find their people on the dance floor. The crew gets into it too. Everyone is just... joyful.

It's the night where VV's "everyone is welcome" ethos stops being a tagline and becomes the actual lived experience of 2,700 people on a ship in the middle of the ocean.

Pro Tips

๐Ÿ“Œ Heads up: Pack your red outfit in your carry-on. Scarlet Night sometimes happens on day two, and if your luggage is delayed to your cabin, you don't want to miss it.

Get to the pool deck early for the reveal. Like, 30 minutes early. It fills up fast and the good viewing spots go quick.

Eat dinner a little earlier than usual. You want to be done and ready when the energy starts building, not rushing through dessert.

Charge your phone. You're going to want photos. Everyone does.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Don't miss: The after-party at The Manor. Even if you "never stay up late on vacation." Make an exception.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Budget tip: Don't buy a new outfit if you don't want to. A red t-shirt from Target works. Seriously. The vibe is what matters, not the price tag.

The Bottom Line

๐ŸŽฏ Bottom line: Scarlet Night is the thing people talk about when they get home. It's the night that converts cruise skeptics. It's the reason I tell people to stop comparing VV to other cruise lines, because no other cruise line is doing anything remotely like this.

If you're planning your first Virgin Voyages sailing and you're wondering what the fuss is about, just wait for Scarlet Night. You'll get it.
