Planning a Queer Wedding or Anniversary Cruise

ยท5 min read

You're engaged. Or you just hit a big anniversary. Or you're doing the "we never had a real wedding" thing that a lot of queer couples do after years of it not being legal and then years of just, you know, living your life.

Whatever the reason, you want to celebrate on a cruise. And you want to do it somewhere you don't have to wonder whether the staff is going to be weird about your two-groom cake topper.

Good news: Virgin Voyages is built for this.

Vow Renewals at Sea

VV offers vow renewal ceremonies on board. This isn't a full legal wedding (you'll want to handle the legal stuff before or after), but it's a beautiful, real ceremony on the ship with your people around you.

The ship's captain or a designated officer officiates. You get the ocean backdrop. You get the champagne toast. You get the photos on the deck at sunset. And you get a crew that is genuinely thrilled to celebrate your love, not just going through the motions.

I've helped couples coordinate these and the crew always goes above and beyond. They understand the moment. They treat it like it matters. Because it does.

The Romantic Cabin Options

If you're celebrating something big, your cabin matters. Here's the breakdown:

Sea Terrace (The Smart Pick)

Every Sea Terrace has a balcony and a hammock. It's honestly romantic as hell without spending suite money. Morning coffee on the balcony, sunset in the hammock, the ocean right there. For most milestone trips, this is the sweet spot.

๐Ÿ’ก Couple tip: Request a mid-ship cabin for the smoothest ride and the easiest access to everything.

RockStar Quarters (The Upgrade)

Extra space, premium perks, and access to Richard's Rooftop, which is a private sundeck with its own bar and hot tub. If you want that "treat yourself" energy without going full penthouse, RockStar is the move. The terrace is bigger, the room is nicer, and you get priority everything.

Massive Suite (The Go Big Option)

If budget isn't a concern and you want the most over-the-top romantic experience VV offers, the Massive Suite has a huge private terrace with a hot tub, peek-a-boo shower, guitars on the wall, and a dedicated "RockStar Agent" who handles everything for you. It's absurd in the best way. Anniversary of a lifetime territory.

Planning a Group Celebration

A lot of queer couples I work with aren't just booking for two. They're bringing friends. Sometimes family. Sometimes a whole crew of people who've been there since day one.

Group cruises are one of my favorite things to coordinate. (I have a full group cruise planning guide if you want the details.) Here's how it works:

  • 8 or more cabins qualifies for group rates and perks through VV
  • Everyone can book their own cabin type (your college friends don't need suites)
  • I coordinate the whole thing so everyone's on the same sailing, same dinner reservations, same shore excursions
  • Group perks can include onboard credit, cabin upgrades, or other bonuses depending on the sailing

๐Ÿ“Œ Good to know: The beauty of a group cruise is that everyone has their own space. This isn't a destination wedding where you're all trapped in the same resort restaurant every night. You can do dinner together, split up for the afternoon, regroup at the pool, and meet up for Scarlet Night. People get space and togetherness in the right proportions.

The Best Restaurants for a Celebration

If you're planning a special dinner, here's where I'd steer you:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Must-try: Extra Virgin for the romantic dinner. Italian food, candlelit energy, beautiful space. It's the kind of restaurant where you look across the table at your person and think, yeah, this was a good idea. My personal favorite on the ship and the one I recommend most for couples celebrating something.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Don't miss: The Wake for the grand occasion. It's the surf and turf steakhouse with a sweeping entrance, ocean views, and food that feels like an event. Great steaks, great seafood, great place to dress up a little and clink glasses.

โœจ Vibe: Pink Agave for the atmosphere. Dim lighting, beautiful design, mezcal cocktails, and some of the best food on the ship. If your partner is the "amazing restaurant" type, this is the one. Book early. I mean it.

Gunbae for a fun group dinner. It's Korean BBQ, it's interactive (you cook at the table), and the soju is complimentary. If you've got a bigger group and want a lively, fun dinner that isn't stuffy, Gunbae is perfect.

Razzle Dazzle for a morning-after brunch. After the big celebration night, regroup here for brunch. It's colorful, it's fun, and the avocado toast will heal whatever the mezcal did to you.

Scarlet Night as Your Built-In Party

Every VV sailing has one Scarlet Night, and it's basically a ship-wide party that you didn't have to plan or pay for. The pool deck transforms, everyone wears red, there are DJs and performers and fire shows. If your celebration happens to coincide with Scarlet Night, that's your reception.

Even if it doesn't line up perfectly, Scarlet Night is the kind of "we're all in this together" energy that makes a group trip feel electric. Just tell everyone to pack something red.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro tip: Check which night is Scarlet Night before you sail and plan your big celebration dinner for a different evening so you don't have to choose between them.

Timing Your Trip

A few things to think about when picking your sailing:

  • Caribbean sailings tend to be more relaxed, shorter (4-8 nights), and more affordable. Great for a chill celebration with a smaller group.
  • Mediterranean sailings are longer (7-11 nights), more expensive, but the ports are incredible. Santorini at sunset with your partner? Yeah. That's a moment.
  • Holiday sailings (New Year's, Valentine's week) have extra celebration energy but book up fast and cost more.
  • Shoulder season (spring and fall) gives you better prices and smaller crowds if you're flexible on dates.

The Stuff I Handle

When you book a milestone trip through me, I'm not just clicking buttons on a website. I'm coordinating restaurant reservations so your group gets seated together. I'm making sure the couple gets the cabin with the best view. I'm prepping everyone on the app, The Band, embarkation strategy, all the first-timer stuff so nobody shows up confused.

I'm also the single point of contact. When your cousin has a question about shore excursions and your best friend needs to change their cabin, they come to me, not you. You're celebrating. I'm working.

That's the point.

You're celebrating. I'm working. That's the point.

Planning a wedding, anniversary, or milestone celebration at sea? Let's talk. Group bookings are one of my favorite things to put together, and I'll make sure the whole thing runs smooth so you can focus on the actual celebrating.

Not sure which sailing is right for you?

Take the 2-minute quiz and I'll point you in the right direction.
